In Schenectady on August 2 a western pound passenger train on the Central road struck two young men walking on the track. James Cleary was killed instantly while Thomas Queeny suffered a broken arm and other serious injuries.

Patrick Connors, a Boston and Maine section man, was found dead near the Atkinson depot with a crushed head. Allen G. Peck, 38, a farmer from Drownville Barrington, attacked John Lewis at 504 South Main by stabbing thrice with a jackknife after jealousy over Annie Aldrich. Lewis wounded in neck and shoulder with uncertain prognosis. Peck captured without resistance and jailed.

At Lake Pleasant Mass August 2 the twelfth annual convocation of the New England Spiritualists association opened with a morning concert by Fitchburg bands an address of welcome by President Beals and a series of talks on spirit matters. Speakers included J T Lillie of Brooklyn A H Dailey of Brooklyn and Juliette Yeau of Leominster with mediumship demonstrations by Edgar W Emerson of Manchester.
A heavy hail storm swept through northern Lancaster County damaging tobacco crops with acres torn up. Jonathan Stewart of Landisville saw his orchard struck by lightning, destroying the trees and contents. An advertisement promotes Angostura Bitters for lemonade and health, urging purchase of the genuine product by Dr. Siegert & Sons.
Washington August 2 The president plans two weeks of rest in the Adirondacks after attending Gen Grant's obsequies in New York. He will consult with leaders on unresolved questions in his annual message and may address Erie canal issues. The city will be quiet, with many officials and strangers leaving for summer retreats.
Washington August 2 The naval advisory board criticizes the board of examination on the Dolphin charge of structural weakness. It argues the evidence relies on vibrations and crankpin heating, disputes the 45 ton bow load claim, and asserts strength. The examiners defend their speed figures and deny any mislead.

The Boston bark Hancock arrived at the Philadelphia dock after mitigation at quarantine due to a crewman’s yellow fever death. Steward Arthur Exton, captain Eaton’s son, died at Cienfuegos and his body was preserved in a liquor cask filled with rum and lashed to the deck before being consigned to the Deep due to heat.

WELLFLEET MASS AUG 2 A fishing schooner F L Hiller Young arrived last night from a five day cruise in Cape Cod bay with 525 barrels mackerel of good quality This makes 25 barrels landed by the Hiller since July 21 Reports plenty of mackerel in the bay and was able to heave away 200 barrels Three more arrivals yesterday from eastern waters with 1140 barrels small fish About 20 boxes of bluefish were taken in traps off Eastham the past week
In Wilkes Barre Hugh Cannon and deaf and dumb girl Kate McDonald were drowned when a raft tilted and they were swept under in a water filled mine hole. Earlier Thomas Jones, a miner, drowned in the Susquehanna River while bathing.
Old Orchard Me August 2 The Ocean Park assembly opened with Rev O B Cheney as president. A memorial service and Lord's supper were held at 9 50 A M with 290 attending. At 10 30 Rev A P Tracey of Vermont preached the assembly sermon. A 3 15 sermon by Rev Woodbury followed and an evening gospel service.
At Chiltenham beach W L Smith and A L Talbot took part in a mid air balloon race. Reaching about 1200 feet the balloons collapsed. Talbot landed largely unharmed while Smith fell the entire distance, struck telegraph wires, and survived only briefly.
For several days a school of marine monsters has been seen disporting in the gulf near the shore. Attempts to harpoon or capture them failed until yesterday when one was caught in a fishing seine, and ropes were thrown.

Police report a 68 year old man from Stoughton named Selden Taylor wandering near Grove Hall at 1:30 A M after being robbed of $30 and clothing. He was assaulted and two or three men helped rob him before he was taken to Mt Pleasant station for lodging and later identified by Roxbury detectives as a familiar, possibly unreliable figure.
A man about 30 is found dead near the rails by Chestnut Hill station as the 10 A M Boston and Albany train from Newton Centre approaches Boston. The body is warm around the neck with no injuries. a fit or medical event is suspected.
In Charlestown a slight fire in an old stable on Cambridge Street caused $25 in damage. A sash and blind shop in New Hampshire suffered a roof fire with $2000 loss fully insured. A dwelling on Pond Street in South Braintree burned, $1000 loss with $700 insured. The steamer C O Kelly burned at Pembroke Ont killing four crew. Brace and Burtons elevator burned at Persia, Iowa.
Fred J. Austin and William Hanson two West End youths were arrested for breaking and entering the stable of C. C. French at 868 Charles street and at Proctor Bros. on Livingston street with larceny totaling 16 dollars. They disappeared after the offenses and their father reported ten dollars missing. The pair returned to Boston on Sunday saying they had been to Savannah Georgia.
