Pasha the polar bear at Franklin Park Zoo enjoys a bread loaf while nearly submerged in his pool as researchers note that he and mate suffer in Boston heat. The animals long for their Arctic homes and Pasha is described as perpetually grouchy in hot weather.
British and French launch a major offensive from the Lys to Dixmude. British penetrate three lines of trenches while French take two. Over 3500 prisoners captured and thousands of German troops killed. Allied losses are reported as surprisingly light.
A report notes that first call fails to meet quotas and board members remain in service. The plan adds a fixed payment of 10 cents per man to doctors, aiming to address staffing costs and improve coverage.

New York July 31 senators Robert M La Follette and A J Gronna formally aligned with the pacifist movement. Telegrams to the People's Council say La Follette will not be intimidated by war traders and will work to elect lawmakers who will repeal onerous laws. Gronna states the constitution has not been repealed nor suspended.
The Fremdenblatt in Vienna reports Germany will gladly act on peace overtures from Vienna. The Cologne Gazette, received here, reproduces Fremdenblatt's authoritative statement.
The Weather Bureau fail to bring relief as Chicago endured a 97 degree day. Nineteen deaths were attributed to the heat.
The body of Ernest L. Zeiss, 60, of Waban, was found on Winthrop Beach near Nahant Avenue in a bathing suit. Doctors say death was due to heart failure brought on by extreme heat, as New England endures two more hot days with prostrations rising in Greater Boston. An east wind later cooled temperatures after a 98 degree peak at 1:30 p.m.

American destroyers fought two submarines six miles away today in British waters. One sub had just sunk a steamer. the other attacked a merchantman before both submarines submerged. A shell within 25 yards forced one sub to dive as steamer witnesses described the action.
