Law on appointing and electing a district attorney in case of vacancy cited from Chapter 11 Section 277 Revised Laws. Upon failure to choose a district attorney, the Governor issues precepts directing proper officers to call meetings.
Governor John McLane arrives to oversee state plans for welcoming the envoys. Despatch boats Mayflower and Dolphin sail in Monday at 10 o'clock with Admiral Meade to greet the visitors. A military guard and 19 gun salute are planned, with a breakfast at the storehouse and reception at the new courthouse.
Frank S. Bean a 48 year old yard conductor for the New York New Haven Hartford died instantly at the South terminal while coupling two cars. Bean of Jamaica Plain was rushed by Station 4 ambulance to Emergency Hospital but died en route.
Three men assaulted and robbed James Ritchie on the Boston Common between 6 and 7 PM while bystanders watched. Ritchie suffered a broken jaw and other injuries, losing $35 as patrols pursued the suspects who fled by jumping on a moving car.
William J. Mead of Cambridge foiled an armed approach by a stranger to steal $65 from Frank Corvea of Sharon. After a chase through Devonshire and State streets, Mead halted the second attempt, guiding Corvea to a bank where the money was deposited.
State Attorney General Julius M. Mayer filed action in New York Supreme Court against the Equitable Life Assurance Society and its officers for misappropriation. The suit seeks full accounting, restitution of misused funds to the society, removal of guilty officers, and use of net surplus for current policy holders. Named defendants include James W. Alexander and a long list of directors and committee members.
Mrs Joseph Smith of 20 Bartlett street found three cylindrical objects on her doorstep. Station 15 officers mistook them for dynamite but later determined they were dry batteries.
The clipper fishing schooner Regina captained by Jerry Shea narrowly escaped disaster when a foretopmast burst through the deck near Cape Cod at dawn. The event damaged the forecastle dining table, but the crew quickly secured the spar and continued fishing, earning about 75,000 pounds before returning home to refasten the spar.
Frederick Drew was slashed in the neck aboard an outward Newton car in Cambridge near the West Boston bridge as Eva Williams and Irene Langford allegedly attacked the conductor to prevent him from ejecting them. Drew, taken to Cambridge Hospital, and the two women were detained for court arraignment.
The local forecast for Boston and nearby areas calls for cloudy skies today with clearing later. Highs near mild, temperatures easing as the day progresses.
Mary Ellen Coyne an 11 year old Arlington girl was struck and killed by a Boston and Maine train this afternoon while she walked on tracks at Avon place. No witnesses to the accident and the cause was not yet clear.

While answering a structure fire call at 52 Batterymarch street Engines 7 and 39 collided at the Batterymarch and High streets corner. Both drivers were thrown and shaken. Engine 7 horses were injured with cuts.
About 60,000 Lancashire cotton workers voted in a ballot last week and decided by a large majority to strike on August 19 unless their demand for a 5 percent wage increase is granted. The action follows a push for higher pay amid ongoing wage talks.
James Wallace of 44 Monument Street Charlestown suffered a severe scalp wound after a hand to hand confrontation with Leon Ching 364 Harrison Avenue. Wallace was at the Chinese man's home when the dispute escalated and he was knocked unconscious and taken to the relief station.
James Reardon of Dover street was struck by a falling iron plate from an elevated railroad at Harrison avenue and Beach street. He was taken to Emergency Hospital with a severe head wound dressed.
