New Cambridge Policeman Fights Off Drunken Trio

Reserve Officer Cornelius Sheehan clashed with James and Wellington Bears when they attacked him after insult rumors near Broadway Winsor in Cambridgeport. Sheehan wrested back the billy, sustained scalp and forehead injuries, and the patrol wagon dispersed the mob.

Blame Sought in Lowell Explosion. DA Leads Inquest

District Attorney George A. Sanderson declared the explosion a major mystery to be solved and leads inquests as well as criminal prosecution. He directed state police and Lowell officers at the scene with witnesses to be called, while tensions rose over blame between Cartridge Company and American Powder Company amid ongoing relief efforts and fears of further detonations.

One Cardinal Sick in Conclave Early Choice Expected

ROME July 31 The largest conclave in church history gathers in the Sistine Chapel to elect a successor to Leo XIII. Nine Indicted In Postal Fraud Schemes In Washington

The federal grand jury returned seven indictments involving nine people on charges of conspiracy and bribery in postal affairs. Key figures include August W. Machen, William Crawford, Leopold J. Stern, George E. Lorenz and relatives and associates from Baltimore to New York. Bail bonds were posted or granted for most defendants, with warrants issued for out of town suspects. Postmaster-General Payne returned from a coast trip as the case expands.

Bridge collapse at Morrison Street in Portland sinks crowd

A section of the Morrison street bridge over the Willamette River collapsed this afternoon, sending more than 100 people into the water. Three are known dead with fears of higher toll as rescuers pull survivors from the river and boat houses below.

Barotse Arrives Stripped For Port At Boston Docks

The Barotse, bucked Bucknell Steamship Company London, arrives at Boston & Maine docks with deck fittings spars and all burnable wood removed to reach port. She departed Calcutta June 7 and was due Monday night but gale force winds depleted coal bunkers last week. Captain Edgar W Bean ordered removal of 90 planks and all wood below to avoid fuel shortages and used sails to assist engines.

Chase in South End Ends With Arrest on Tremont Street

In the South End near 743 Tremont Street two well dressed men fled after a box of cigars at 9:15 last night pursued by a grocer and two police. One man dumped the cigars and escaped while the other boarded a car on Massachusetts Avenue. A crowd followed and Officer Malloy arrested a well dressed suspect on a rear seat after a Northampton Street stop. The detainee protested the arrest.

Providence fugitive James Hunt arrested in Fall River

After a four month police chase Hunt from Providence was captured in Fall River near the police station. He faced embezzlement assault and battery and assault with a dangerous weapon charges and bailed through John Shaw. He was returned to Providence after surrendering in a local saloon.
