Spectators gathered along the shore as bands played and children sang to celebrate a revered leader. The mood was joy over the memory of a great man, not sorrow for a hero's death, with youths shouting in high spirits.
Members of Grant Post G A R marched past the Grant Monument yesterday and were honored with raising the largest American flag ever to ripple in the wind as the military and naval processions passed.
At 7 30 p m John Moore, a mill hand, shot and killed himself after firing at Miss Nellie Connors, a mill operative, at C A Day's boarding house 461 Canal street. Connors is hospitalized in precarious condition from a bullet wound. Moore entered through a window after drinking heavily and the dispute led to two shots then a self inflected wound.
In Portland on Mt. Taber line a motorman lost control and the car jumped the track, crashing through a bridge into a slough twenty five feet below. Thirty four aboard. three believed dead, many injured. most passengers laborers escaping as water depth varied along the stretch.
Mrs Josephine Stone of 18 Leverett Street was knocked about by a thief who followed her from a Boston car to Lexington Street Charlestown and grabbed her pocketbook containing $10. A passerby held the suspect until police arrived. he gave the name Joseph Sivers of 89 Chambers Street and faces Charlestown District Court arraignment.
Rose Trainor of 15 Earle Street South Boston reported to Station 6 a burglar entered between 6 40 and 7 10 p m breaking a trunk in a room and taking 200 in gold from a wooden box Entry was made by lifting a basement window catch.
A massive fire at Chesapeake & Ohio pier No. 6 in Newport News caused about 2 million dollars in damage. Two piers burned, three vessels and a tugboat destroyed, eight people injured, and the blaze driven by a fierce north wind. Crews evacuated to safety as ships Clintonia Solveig and J. D. Bischoff burned, with extensive cargo losses and insurance covering most damages.
