In Ottawa April 26 Sir John Macdonald defended Canada's stance on compensation from the United States for British vessels seized in Behring Sea. MP Prior cited eleven ships seized and urged swifter settlement, noting delays contrast with rapid action on the Samoan question. He urged England to send a man of war while others pressed for an ambassador to Washington to secure a resolution.
Hooper threatens not to surrender the captives until a payment of £1000 is made. The English consul here is prepared to pay the ransom demanded.

The medical bill failed while the naval reserve bill passed in the Senate. Senator Dixon supported the naval reserve bill and has resigned his State Senate seat after last election victory.
A Baltimore & Ohio passenger train collision near Howard street injures four workers and endangers Vice-President Levi P. Morton and many passengers. Governor Foraker and General Schofield’s party were aboard. The crash followed a bent switch rod causing two trains to share a track at the Y junction between Locust Point and Washington lines.
The Boston and Albany limited express to New York crashed into a preceding freight in the yard due to wet tracks and brake failure. Engineer Dr Brackett reversed the locomotive blowing cylinder heads, two oil tank cars derailed, but passengers were uninjured. The Southbound steamer train carried passengers to Union depot. At Brookfield braces on a pole car broke causing wreckage and platform damage.

Gideon Manchester of Tiverton wins $750 against James Church and others after a long feud over a shore triangle at Stone Bridge. The case grew from an old Indian burial ground later used for a Baptist meeting house site and later disputed land rights. The feud included vandalism, attempted hut removal, and a large moving operation ending with the jury’s ruling.
