At 419 Beacon Street last evening Mrs. John Brewster became Mrs. E Burritt Palmer in a ceremony at Odd Fellows Hall. About forty patriarchs resigned their ranks for Hymen, led by Rev Brooke Herford. The couple left for a wedding journey through the golden West amid hearty congratulations and gifts including a silver set from fellow patriarchs.
In Lowell today Attorney General Sherman urged a restraining order against Charles H. Conant and George E. Stanley from acting as Lowell school committee members. The case was referred to the full bench for decision on several novel legal questions. The full bench does not meet until November.
In Albany New York on April 26 a sensational case emerges from Binghamton. William Cladey a colored man who was hungry sold his bones for two drinks of whiskey to a physician purchaser. A signed contract binds the transaction and Cladey now seeks incineration of his remains rather than having bones mounted. He has hired Robert A. Stone as counsel and may sue to recover the document. If a suit proceeds, all parties will be named.
In Brockton on April 26 business leaders met Old Colony railroad officials at the Commercial Club to discuss tariff changes. Freight on shoes rose 1 cent per hundred to Boston while New York rates held, and sole leather rates fell 2 cents. A gas explosion ignites a four story Willis Bros. building in Pirrseure Pennsylvania, killing Sophie and Fred Shultz and injuring two men who leapt from the fourth floor. Loss pegged at 25000, portions insured. In Marquette Michigan the Huron stamp mill at Houghton burned this afternoon with losses around 50000 and 20000 insured.
After an eight and a half hour meeting the Worcester board of aldermen approved 178 liquor licenses and ordered printing of section 12 of chapter 100 of the Public Statutes in the license. The section requires closing saloon entrances except those on public streets and removal of screens.
Despatch from Cape Charles reports the barge J. W. Everman foundered this morning and Captain Josephs drowned. The rest of the crew were taken aboard the tug Ivanhoe and conveyed to Norfolk. Also noted: Wide Awake of New Bedford sank near Hyannis breakwater after parting chains in a gale. crew saved, captain exhausted.
Charleston April 26 crowds gathered for Calhoun day as a grand civic and military procession moved to Marion square for unveiling ceremonies. Secretary Lamar delivered an oration praising Calhoun's life and devotion to South Carolina, while addresses, prayers, and an ode framed the memorial. The crowd filled King, Calhoun and Meeting streets as the monument was unveiled and the day concluded without incident.
