Place Arms Purchases Fraud Allegations Clarified
New York April 26. The French Courrier des Etats Unis says Victor Place, late French Consul at this port, had little to do with arms purchases for the government. He would sail home but for family illness and will seek a full examination in Versailles. Place claims his duties limited to supervising shipments not buying provisions. He denies profiting and will push for investigation. An anniversary celebration by Odd Fellows occurred in Newark with singing and an address. A libel case in the Court of Appeals awarded $5,000 plus costs to E. L. Sanderson against Sunday Mercury owners for libel. Charles Bowles, a Paris and London banker, arrived on the Scotia.
