Boston and Maine to Cut Local Fares Across Divisions

The Boston and Maine Railroad announces a broad fare reduction effective May 1 with a uniform 2 cents per mile to Reading and stations on this side and 3 cents beyond Reading, plus 8 cents per mile on eastern division branches. The move, though costing the company about $40,000 yearly, aims to benefit patrons and is tied to the lease consolidation plan.

Rail interests shift control of Manchester and Lawrence lines

Boston and Maine friends are poised to gain a controlling stake in Manchester and Lawrence stock with directors to be elected next month. If successful, Maine lines may operate Lawrence within three months, with high stock sales reported at 225 dollars a share. Potential leadership indicates Chandler could become president and push Merrimac Valley toward a unified continental system.
