New England today lags in Liberty bond subscriptions for World War I, failing to meet the nationwide goal of five billion dollars while some cities push over the top. The piece laments regional apathy and calls for renewed patriotic effort to raise the required funds for troops in France.
Washington April 23 report denies German claim that shock troops penetrated American and French lines before Seicheprey and returned unseen after long fighting. Dublin witnesses a near total work stoppage as labor bodies enforce a protest against conscription. Leaders planned the action with little opposition, making the stoppage broader than a typical strike and reflecting widespread participation.
Railways halted operations and companies announced traffic discontinuance while streets emptied. Newspapers, shops, and moving picture houses stayed closed and saloonkeepers followed the anti conscription pledge. Early morning order prevailed with little military presence and no obvious dissent.

Dr Herbert S Johnson of Warren Avenue Baptist Church dispatches a telegram from South Bend Ind opposing inviting a Unitarian to occupy a Baptist pulpit. He says he prefers orthodox stance but admits openness to various faiths, while Dr Courtland Myers of Tremont Temple supports the idea. The telegram replies to Myers commitment and notes Johnson’s absence from his church due to patriotic addresses.
Open trolley cars will be used by the Boston Elevated this summer only on lines operating from the South Boston car barn. All other districts will go without these aids due to weather comfort economy.
