C E Marston of 27 Maple Avenue Somerville, employed by Chase Merritt and Co shoe makers 82 High Street, shot himself in New Haven House after registering Friday night. The coroner found five sealed letters, one to the hotel proprietor urging discretion. Marston aged 26 and unmarried, was described as jovial or despondent by his father. He had been involved with a New York woman, a relationship thought to have ended months earlier. He left New Haven after a restless evening. no marriage letters found. The body to be brought home for brief Mt Auburn services.
The Cunard steamship Campania arrived in Queenstown on its maiden voyage from Liverpool in 700 minutes with guests including John Morley and Arnold Morley aboard. Crowds greeted Morley ashore and again later as he left for Cork, while a brass band cheered the visitors.

Quincy April 23 Liquor Officer Mc Grath with Chief Langley and Officer Ferguson raided the Italian boarding house at Franklin and Water kept by Charles Rath. They seized one barrel of wine one half barrel of beer one half barrel of cider and one half barrel of whiskey. The house was owned by Henry H Faxon a noted temperance advocate. The raid underscores local enforcement amid a temperance backdrop.
A Cambridge electric struck Minnie Strauss on Lowell Street at about 6 pm killing her and injuring others nearby. Onlookers blamed speed and lack of fender safety as the West End Railway Company faced harsh criticism while officials investigated the incident and removed the body to the North Grove street morgue.
In Medford Meprorp on April 23 the colonial style club house opened after a business meeting with 177 members present and 22 new applicants acted upon. The $23,000 building features parlors on the first floor, green walls, oak furniture, water colors, billiard rooms, card rooms and toilets. In Strovpssure Penn April 25 an explosion set off by miners building the Wilkes Barre and Eastern Railroad at Yatesville killed three workers including one Italian and two colored men. The death toll from blasting and dynamite related to this road construction rises to twenty two. Contractors have paid as high as 1500 dollars in damages for a life.
Washington April 23 The Due de Veragua and party attended pontifical high mass at St Joseph’s Church to mark St Joseph feast. Rev W F Lehmitt welcomed them to front pews draped with Spanish and American flags Mgr Satolli celebrated mass and Rev od Donohue preached the sermon on the feast.
The last electric car from Boston on the Lynn and Boston line crashed into a carriage near Fox Hill bridge at 11:30 p.m. The two carriage occupants escaped unharmed, but the horse suffered a broken leg and the carriage was destroyed. The turnout was owned by Phillips of Boston.
Funeral held last Saturday for Jacob Wammerle oldest German in Boston. Born Baden June 1797, he came to Boston in 1851 and worked as carpenter and builder before retiring in 1865 to Jamaica Plain with son-in-law Joseph M. Weilhart at 213 Lamartine Street.
