Allied troops hurl back a heavy German attack near Toul as shock troops stormed Seideprey. Germans pushed into trenches but were driven out and the original lines restored. Fighting raged with fierce hand to hand as they tried to separate American and French forces.
A 3:30 pm tremor in Southern California killed one person at a resort and injured a woman fleeing a downtown theater. The quake shattered windows and cornices, cut communications to two small towns, and caused extensive property damage across the region.
In Dublin on April 21 crowds across Ireland publicly subscribed to a covenant against conscription. Priests led the process from Catholic pulpits and bishops and political leaders outlined the plan in widespread, quiet demonstrations.
