Waddell Closes Boston comeback in dramatic Athletics win

In a sunlit opener at Huntington Avenue Philadelphia erased a four run Boston lead in five minutes in the eighth inning. Norwood Gibson powered the rally with speed on the bases as Harry Davis scored the tying run and Lav Cross delivered the decisive hit. Rube Waddell relieved and fanned five of six batters, ending Boston’s rally and securing a 5 to 4 Athletics victory after a dramatic late surge.

Coaster Mary Whiley wrecked on rock near Cape Elizabeth

The two masted schooner Mary Whiley from Portsmouth bound for Bangor with grain ran on a rock near the Cape Elizabeth lifesaving station in fog and will be a total loss. The crew were saved by the station crew. Built in 1863, 100 tons gross, 79.5 by 26.1 by 8.2, owned by Captain Zachariah Williams and Portsmouth interests, valued at 1500 dollars with grain cargo valued at 3000 dollars.
