Grand Vanderbilt wedding fills Calvary Church with society
The New York Sun reports the April 21 ceremony at Calvary Church uniting Miss Alva Smith and William H. Vanderbilt Jr. The immense crowd included Commodore and Mrs Vanderbilt and many society figures. The reception at the bride’s father’s 213 West 44th Street home drew over two thousand guests. Gifts are said to total around half a million. The couple departed by palace car for their wedding journey while observers left with the old shoe tradition for luck. A later note mentions gold coin found.
