Speculation runs high on impeachment results as sporting men trade bets. Rumors center on a President’s conviction with close scrutiny of each Senator’s voting record. A Radical offered 1000 dollars that Trumbull would back conviction, but the wager was declined amid doubt.

House Proceedings and Bankruptcy Bill Passage 1868

The House debated rescinding impeachment resolutions against Andrew Johnson, then considered measures on telegraph control, franking privileges, Navy officer counts, and a commission for powder magazines. A bankruptcy bill was amended and passed, extending provision for fifty percent discharge only with creditor approval. Messages from the President touched Russia and Confederate property. Massachusetts railroads memorialized. House adjourned after 3:30 PM.
