Funeral of a Martyr President In Historic City
General officers formed with staffs and bore the remains into the Exchange building. A grand catafalque beneath the dome, 11 by 4 feet base, featured black crape canopy, silver fringes, and a central velvet star with thirty six stars. The dais held evergreens and flowers as the crowd watched in orderly reverence.

Calamity in Richmond and Libby Prison powder plots
The Richmond Whig notes no public grief in Richmond due to the calamity that convulsed the nation and mentions authorities restricting gatherings. It reports powder magazines at Libby Prison intended to blow it up if Richmond fell, later removed, and describes evacuation from Gordonsville with wounded and property sent to Lynchburg for Grant's troops.
