Capture of Apalachicola by Union naval expedition
Herald correspondence reports the April 2 attack on Apalachicola by sailors from the gunboats Merceditas and Sagamore under Commander Stellwagen and Lt Abbott. The town surrendered with little resistance, fortifications were dismantled, two schooners captured, and several vessels found upriver. Union forces touted as restoring the flag, while blockade and shortages cripple the town.
