House Defeats Anticorruption Franchise Bill
In the Massachusetts House yesterday, Garet Worcester's substitute for a merchantile affairs bill failed, seeking to limit telegraph and telephone franchises to 20 years. A similar motion by Davis of Salem to substitute an adverse taxation report also failed. The bill would tax public service companies on gross receipts, with 25 percent to the state and 75 percent to cities and towns if dividends reach 6 percent.
