Marine journal ships collide and sailers rescued at sea

Sch ME Pharo of Tuckerton bound for Providence with 267 tons coal from Philadelphia collided with William Smith of New York for Savannah off Barnegat. Pharo sank in minutes. Captain Hanson and crew escaped to William Smith which returned to New York. Other vessels suffered losses or damage including Brach Malanta from St John NB to Boston lost at West Quoddy Head, Bark F Bunchinia ashore at Seven Foot Knoll but refloated, Bark Philad from Shields to New York in distress near Rockland, and Sch Marcellus Bray from Calais to Boston ashore at West Quadd Head with cargo disruption. Sch Mountain Wave from Porto Cabello reports NW gale in Gulf Stream.

Arsenic in Tobacco Sparks Medical Debate and 1855 Fire Costs

Montigny cites northern Chinese arsenic in tobacco, with missionaries claiming arsenic free tobacco is unavailable and smokers described as stout with strong lungs.
