Rev. Dr. David Stern, former rabbi of the Jewish temple in Wilkes-Barre, died after a suspected suicide. He arrived from Philadelphia, was found in his hotel room with a glass of liquid, letters to friends, and a note indicating he took poison at 10 AM. He bequeathed his library to Rev. Fessenthal of Chicago and denied atheism.
In Dallas on April 19 a freight train at a wood station west of Mineola was boarded by three armed negro robbers who seized Joseph Toblowsky and a companion in the caboose. Toblowsky lost nearly 100 dollars and a gold watch and chain, while his companion lost 15 dollars and jewelry. The robbers fled into dense timber and were gone about 15 minutes before discovery.
Fall River report says John E Blaisdell missing Weetamore mill bookkeeper left New York on a steamer to Cuba after telling his uncle Jesse F Eddy about troubles and asking him to alert his father Judge Blaisdell. Judge Blaisdell learned the tale upon meeting Eddy in Providence and an inspection of the mill books began.
Pittsburg reports the national convention adjourned at 6 am after a 20 hour session with no definite action known. It is believed the previous scale of 550 dollars per ton for puddling was reaffirmed. In Cincinnati Glen Dale a man shot a stranger dead after being ordered to raise his hands while another two men vanished with a carcass.
New Bedford mass April 19 uncertainty grips Acushnet strikers as workers await whether the mill will reopen. Many hope to return, but mill officers show caution likely keeping the mill closed another week. A woman weaver notes that if others in her section go in, she will follow.
The gunboat Boyeea arrived from Buenaventura. A canal tug that took down the commission is in the river. The government reportedly purchased a hull from Pacific Steamship Navigation to move troops to Panama, and the Geneva sailing craft may be towed up with troops. A Spanish manifesto incites against the Americans. Interior reports are grim and locals fear attack from Cauca. American troops report good health.
In Baltimore the Rev A J Glor ieaux was consecrated bishop partibus infidelium and apostolic vicar of Idaho at the cathedral with Archbishop Gibbons as consecrator. Attending priests and assistant bishops from Savannah and Covington assisted. the ceremony was described as most impressive.

The body of an unidentified man about 40 was recovered from the Merrimac near Sutton's mill in Lawrence. He was found in a dark suit and overcoat, appeared to have been in the water for weeks. A pay envelope with the name Charles Querault was found. the Medical Examiner ordered burial and inquiries to identify him continue.
Reading dispatch reports a fire at a two story frame building on the Alsace truck farm owned by Augustus L. Weatzel near Philadelphia. Four people died: Harry Weatzel 11, Charles Wentzel 13, Charles Hetzinger 16, and Fred Hetzinger 26, all burned to death.

Newark N J April 19 Mr Frelinghuysen slept almost all day from the effect of anodynes and was roused briefly for nourishment. He was partially conscious in the evening, and at 11 P M he fell asleep. His pulse 72 and respiration regular. Physicians say he is a little weaker than yesterday though the change is slight.
Machias Me April 19 Knights and Parker the Grand Manan thieves and Crowley of Calais escaped Machias jail last night with a false key. The Knights and Parker were to be tried at the April term of court at Calais. Crowley was sent up for nine and a half days for drunkenness.

In Newburg New York on April 18 James Barclay and Joseph Myers wife from Montgomery eloped and returned home. Myers stabbed the woman with a neck knife leaving a six inch neck wound and another under the ear. Myers then attacked Barclay with two deep gashes in the throat and near the ear. Believing he finished, Myers cut his own throat and threw the knife from the window. Barclay is expected to survive while Myers and the wife likely died.
Berlin reports Hermit islands natives in the Pacific have eaten the crews of two German merchant vessels. A gunboat Hyena has been dispatched to punish the cannibals.
Rev. George W. Cooke spoke at the Christian Union rooms on Sunday urging that money can advance or ruin a nation. He warned repudiation and poor monetary laws foster corruption, while just laws encourage honesty, industry, thrift, and peace.

Sullivan and Gerry, aged 16 and 17, were found guilty in Burlington for arson at a freight house and sentenced to two years.
