Tragic Deaths On Tracks After Boy Sacrifices to Save Dog

Richard Casey and Willie Gray, guardian and ward, attempted to rescue a small cloth dog on the New York New Haven and Hartford tracks near Heath Street. Willie perished as a train struck the pair while Richard survived with injuries. The dog Rover, faithful to Willie, aided in delaying the danger. Nearby, six year old Philip Walker was run over by a wagon at Washington and Hollis streets, sustaining a broken arm and injuries. Walker is from 18 Melrose street.

Eleven Drowned As Eliza Sinks At Rose and Crown Shoal

The Eliza rail fisherman carried as many men as a trawler but had only one boat aboard. After striking the Rose and Crown shoal near Nantucket, four hours passed as three men clung to a dory while others vanished with the schooner. Bodies not recovered. The shoal lies ten miles east of Siasconset with depth variations from seven to fifteen feet.

Deep grief in Beverly over loss of the Eliza schooner

Beverly April 18 news of the schooner Eliza losing life aboard shook the town. Captain Hopkins age 37 and crew of fourteen, all from Barrington Nova Scotia, were deeply mourned by families and neighbors. The Eliza built 1877 at Salem carried forty eight tons and valued at 2400 dollars. Captain Hawkins owned five eighths, with Foster Trafton and Haskell each one eighth. Hopkins left a wife and three boys in Beverly and eight widows resided in Nova Scotia. The letter from Hyannis quotes worry over bad weather before the tragedy. Captain Hopkins was a Jubilee Yacht Club member and an Ancient Order of United Workmen member.

More than 300 Boston area letter carriers gathered at the American Loos banquet hall for a formal evening with top postal officials and union leaders. President Frank J. Patriots Eve Social Event Draws Crowds at St John’s Hall
