Obituary of John Lord Hayes LL.D. in Cambridge
John Lord Hayes LL.D. died at his Cambridge home yesterday morning. Born in 1812 in South Berwick Maine, he studied at Berwick Academy Dartmouth College Harvard Law School and was admitted to the bar in 1845. He served as clerk of the U S courts for New Hampshire 1841 1846 and held many positions including secretary of the National Association of Wool Manufacturers and editor of its Bulletin. He also assisted in reciprocity treaty advocacy and railroad ventures in Mexico and the United States.

Women allowed to land after Crompton Company case
Howard Richmond of Crompton Company argued before Collector Saltonstall that eight women brought to the United States under contract to finish and cut velveteens qualify as skilled labor under the 1885 act. John Tretwell testified the work is new to the country and benefits American labor. the collector ruled the women exempt and ordered their landing from the Pavonia, after detaining them since Saturday.

Charitable Irish Society Holds Monthly Meeting at Parker House
The Charitable Irish Society convened last evening with Dr. Moran presiding. Twenty-eight new members elected seven proposed. A $100 gift to the charitable fund from Mr. R B Forbes was accepted with thanks. A seven member committee to report on observances and history of the 150th anniversary was formed, and the history to be printed for members. Salary for the secretary raised to $250 annually. New York April 18. Recorder Smythe convened the Court of General Sessions to face a crowd of business men indicted for violating the oleomargarine law. District Attorney Martine said about a hundred indictments may be pursued. fines will be imposed and some sentences suspended. Defendants pled guilty, with Briggs and McQuade fined $350 for two indictments and sentence suspended on others. Small shopkeepers were given ten days to settle. Chief Clerk John Clark collected $4,750 as the court adjourned.

Abduction Charge Shocks Hartford Area
In Har t or t Conn David Hayes and wife were arrested for abducting 14 year old Mary Manion adopted by M J McCarthy of New Britain. Mary vanished after being taken to New Britain a week ago. Mrs Hayes confessed to police alleging the girl was sent to Providence to avoid an intimate relationship with a New Britain man. The pair were taken to New Britain for hearing. Also, about 8000 Chicago carpenters returned to work at eight hours and 86 cents per hour.
