Thomas Longboat declares in Boston his aim to win the upcoming Marathon race Friday. He says he feels strong despite a slight cold and would not want to return home without victory.
By C. H. Ashley of Toronto, physical director of West End Y. M. C. A., expects Longboat to win if he can set a new mark though a slight cough concerns him.
Thomas Longboat the Onondaga star arrives from Toronto to race in the Boston Athletic Association 25 mile marathon tomorrow. Doctor Frank L Burt says he will be in condition for the race after a temporary stomach and throat ailment. He is accompanied by C H Ashley of the West End Y M C A Toronto.

Senopolo Bruno 40 of 1912 Tileston street North End claims he was threatened by a Black Hand emissary Francisco Aloia 21 of 10 Charter street who slashed him twice then Bruno fired five shots wounding Aloia on Tileston street. Bruno, facing assault with a loaded revolver charge, and Aloia, charged with assault with a sharp instrument, were detained by Hanover Street Station patrolmen.

Altoona Penn April 17 John Ellmore's ashes burning formula once guarded by the cobbler inventor is now common property. City households are converting ashes into fuel, achieving coal bill savings never imagined, after Ellmore reportedly refused a $1,000,000 offer.
Chemists announce a compound made from common salt oxalic acid and coal ash combined with water. When mixed with coal and ashes the blend fuses into a coke like mass and drives rapid combustion. Reported to cut fuel costs by more than half and ease ash disposal in large industrial and mercantile use.
The United National Association of Postoffice Clerks Branch 5 chose John J. O'Brien as president with the central office and 42 stations voting. other officers include John L. Murphy and Edward W. Connors with McGovern Locke as treasurer. Delegates to the Fitchburg Mass convention are Barry Levi Magee Sullivan, with F. F. Lasey Coffey Daley OFlaherty Sullivan and William Tarlinski as directors. O'Brien won the highest votes ever for Branch 5 president.

A fire at 42 to 50 Lewis Street in the North End threatened many lives and was suspected to be incendiary. A second nearby blaze at Clark and North streets, also believed set by a firebug, heightened neighborhood alarm.
A basement store room at No 44 Andrew De Vito grocer caused a fire that filled the four story brick building with smoke. Patrolmen Wilson Mullen and Hoseman Downey led many occupants to the roof as fire could not enter the stairways. Fire confined to basement and store. state police and inspector notified.
Miss Effen Beach Yaw, secretly married weeks ago to Vere Goldthwaite, a Boston lawyer and writer, astonishes society with a bright romance. Known as the singer with the most wonderful threat and voice, she earned the nickname vocal freak. Born near Buffalo in 1871, she moved to California as a child, crowned Los Angeles’ highest soprano, studied in Europe under Marchesi and Vergine, and performed in grand opera as Elena Elvanna.
The handsome lawyer and the noted songstress wed in a private ceremony at the Hotel Somerset on March 31 with Rev. Seth C. Beach officiating. After a week in New York they returned to Boston, planning a Western honeymoon and eventual permanent residence here. Mrs. Goldthwaite, 28, and Mr. Goldthwaite, 38, began their romance nine years ago on a voyage abroad, sailing together to Liver pool, Naples, and Ireland before their nuptials.

Senator William E Chandler arrived in Boston to assist in preparing the Eddy case set for Concord on May 13. He described the trustees of the Christian Science Church replies as absurd and vowed to proceed with preparations, with meetings in Boston and potential Concord acts including further motions or an alienist inquiry into Mrs Eddy's mental condition.
In New York on April 17 Clifford W. Hartridge disclosed a letter from Harry K. Thaw after a discussion with A Russell Peabody in the Tombs prison. The letter asks Hartridge and Peabody to continue as Thaw's attorneys of record and is signed Very sincerely Harry K Thaw. Hartridge offered no comment.

New York April 17 Harry Thaw's bid for bail faced a setback as District Attorney Jerome refused to hear of releasing Thaw. Eight witnesses in the trial testified to insanity and the jury verdict was 7 to 6 for first degree murder, prompting Jerome to insist Thaw remain in the Tombs until the next trial.
Cobalt town Latchford was destroyed by fire tonight, a mining settlement in the Cobalt mining district near Toronto. A rapid blaze gutted buildings, with authorities investigating the cause as residents assessed the damage.
