Cincinnati April 17 Comptroller James H Eckels outlined against free silver coinage arguing it harms debtors and miners while noting global monetary links. He urged reconciling debtor and mine owner interests and warned against isolating US markets proposing policies that restore confidence and attract international capital.
Mrs Julia B French attempted to conduct her own case before the Supreme Court over an insurance policy on John Montair. Judge Allen warned that only a lawyer could properly present the matter. Montair appeared alive as his daughter Mrs L Blanche Endres contested the policy's assignment. A contested release by Endres’s daughter prompted adjournment for two weeks to allow examination.
Watertown April 17 Selectmen move to reshape the police department after Chief Ducey is asked to resign. J O H Coen, in charge of the force, called on Ducey to step down, a surprise amid expectations of a settlement. The case was withdrawn from the Supreme Court by mutual consent, and further changes are anticipated as residents foresee new court action.
The British Medical Journal reports progress in applying photography to throat diseases. The cryptoscope may help locate foreign bodies in air passages and track instruments as they seek offending particles, enabling view-through capability during procedures.
A three and a half story brick block on L street owned by Frank H. Roberts burned at 4:30 am. Five children among two families died including Aimie and Lena Duboise and Rosa Boumier and Edward and Josephine Coumartine. Father Joseph Duboise and others escaped after heroic attempts. Funeral for the five victims set for 9 am at the French Catholic Church.

An eighty seven foot floral arch over the organ, tropical plant terraces, laurel festoons, and lavish front arrangements promise an imposing tribute to the dead governor.

John Schultess jumped from a pavilion at Seaside Park and struck shallow water. Doctors report neck vertebrae fractured and death was nearly certain. He apparently mis judged water depth.
In Hartford on Main street an old gas main being removed leaked and a danger lantern ignited the gas. Night watchman Cornelius Ahern and hackman Frank Bracken were burned, Bracken severely, as a flare burst from the trench early this morning.

Sheriff Shinn of Cumberland county will soon hold a public sale to satisfy $40,000 in judgments, offering the entire town of Helberstown including fifty plus houses, a large factory, and about 5000 acres of land. The town, established in 129 by a New York syndicate, was a venturesome but spectacular failure.
