In Baltimore a glass plant scaled back operations after firing many workers and keeping one furnace running. Six weeks later several apprentices, left unpaid,laminated threats and attempted to blow up a city block home using a 10 pound gunpowder charge. The assailants remain at large.
In New Bedford the Acushnet mill workers are converting looms to handle three or four leaf or spline weaving to meet startup emergencies. Rumor says Shakeshaft may not chair Saturday’s meeting with Robert Howard of Fall River likely to preside. Several families have left the city for mill work elsewhere and French families are moving to Canadian farms they earned.
In Eas? Bridgewater Mass on April 16 the Plymouth and Bay conference of Unitarian churches met at the Unitarian church with Hon John D Long presiding. Rev Green opened with prayer and Rev H P Collier spoke on Have Unitarians a Policy prompting a discussion led by local ministers and area lay members. A bountiful collation followed in the town hall before the afternoon session resumed the morning topics.
In New York on April 16 Carl Abs the German hercules won the first fall against Matsuda Sorakichi the Japanese in four minutes. Sorakichi led twice in the second round but could not secure a fall and gave up after an hour and a half citing illness. The match was for $250 aside and ended with an offer for a rematch in a mixedJapanese German style.
Rutland Vermont April 16 direct examination of Accountant McNare in the Page trial ends as cross examination is waived. Depositions offered by the defense suggest railroad owed its existence to ex Gov Page's funds and credit. Ex Gov Page testifies in detail on plaintiff specifications and denies Hiven partnership in scrip purchase and bond conversion.
Four more liquor dealers in Gloucester Massachusetts were convicted and fined seventy five dollars with three months in the house of correction. Thomas Handry William Bushey John Tracy and Charles Scott received the penalties as cases involving safes seized were decided. Charles F Carter Hugh Chalmers and Edward Kippen were discharged. Two large injuries valued as belonging to the two latter were noted and the liquor claimed by other parties will be returned.
Atlanta announces bids opened for 3,500,000 state bonds to run 30 years with interest not over 5 percent. Bids totaled about 15,990,000 from 35 bidders, including New York firms and Georgia citizens. Highest Georgia bids reached 107.5 for small portions, with award expected in a few days.
Hartford dispatch reports both houses fixed next Thursday afternoon April 23 at 4 o'clock for final adjournment. The senate killed the standard insurance policy bill and, in concur rence, passed a bill allowing assessment insurance companies to operate in the state and permitting judges and others to accept corporate suretyship instead of individual bonds. The senate also rejected a home stead exemption bill.
Franklin reports signs of an economic revival with multiple plants resuming activity. E. K. Kay will reopen the rubber works next week, A. D. Thayer will restart his felt mill after a year shutdown, and Addison M. Thayer’s rectory project may resume soon. Only one straw goods factory remains closed since June.
Pierre D T April 16 A mob of 25 men from the eastern part of the county seized James H Bell of Treffold from jail at 2 am and took him to the courthouse flagstaff The man was accused of murdering Forest G Small a lawyer formerly from Sterling Tr on December 4 last Access to the jail was easy due to failing locks and bars.
Fourteen hundred Barbour Flax Spinning Company employees walked out in Paterson demanding a ten percent wage increase to offset two prior cuts. The strike closed the two large mills and word from Ireland where the Berbours are currently is awaited.
In Buffalo on April 16 all employees of the Bankers and Merchants Telegraph company walked out at 10 am over unpaid wages. The firm owes two months of last year and one month of the current month. The office is closed with the manager remaining in charge.
In Baru Maine Superior Court the jury awarded Marsha P. Chase 3775 for her husband's death when struck by a Maine Central Railroad train at a crossing in Sece poro. The verdict affirmed the plaintiff's claim against the railroad for damages.
Special dispatch reports George W. Williams, named minister resident and consul general to Haiti by President Arthur, faced serious charges including lack of bond, unpaid debts from Europe, and possible political betrayal. Bayard withholds salary pending qualification. Williams seeks to portray himself as a martyr amid accusations.
The administration plans to replace incompetent colored Republicans with capable colored Democrats rather than substituting whites. Tim Hamilton, former Beaufort representative, is appointed route agent from Beaufort to Jacksonboro, S C. The policy follows 1876 South Carolina events and aims to maintain colored political control with qualified personnel.

Chicago bridge plan proposed by Commissioner Cregier features a $1,200,099 tunnel under the river to Fulton and Marnet streets. Pittsburgh, Va reports Rev Father Phelan named coadjutor to Bishop Twigg, with resignation anticipated from Bishop Ywige. Phelan to lead consolidated Pittsburgh and Allegheny diocese.
