London Symphony Repeats Not Diminishing Its Impact
The Boston Symphony Orchestra under Pierre Monteux performed Vaughan Williams's London Symphony twice, with the second performance praised as even more revealing. Arthur Sheperd's Fantasy for piano and orchestra debuted in Boston with Heinrich Gebhard at the piano, following Tschaikowsky's Romeo and Juliet Overture. The review lauds the symphony as original, urban, and emotionally weighted with English temperament, noting Stravinsky and French influence while favoring Williams's individuality. The pianist's debut drew enthusiastic applause, and critics suggest potential refinements for Sheperd's piece.
