Convention Row and Water Toss at Missouri Silver Meeting

In Sedalia on April 15 the Democratic convention named William M. Hatch as temporary chairman to push free silver. A heated scene erupted as the credentials of St. Louis sound money delegates were debated. Water was hurled at Mr. Maffitt from Colonel Bell after a tense exchange, leaving records damp as the day recessed and resumed with committee delays and further speeches.

River Flood Threatens West Side Flats In St Paul

Swollen Mississippi River continues rising from St Paul to Grand Rapids with two feet more likely to push residents on West Side flats to higher ground. Several bridges already washed away as the flood spreads through the area and causes property damage.

Dore's Wife in Lynn Assault Threatens Husband

A jealous wife attacked Ira P. Dore with a shard of plate glass in Lynn early Wednesday, severing an artery and nearly killing him. Dore, a shoe trimmer, was saved by Dr. Little after blood loss. Jennie Dore, under 30 and separated from him, is at large under police surveillance. The incident followed a ball event where Dore and Jennie’s rival was present.

Eleven Crowns at Athens Olympic Games Closing

The Olympian games closed in perfect weather with a kingly ceremony. A Pindaric ode by an American, wreaths for first prize winners, laurel for seconds, diplomas and medals, and national anthems followed a victory parade. Forty four crowns were awarded to athletes including eleven Americans and ten Greeks. Plans were made for the next games in Athens in 1898 with banquets continuing as the city celebrated.

A major blaze near Cataumet Wenaumet swirls through pine groves sending residents from Monument Beach and Sandwich into flight. Firefighters, aided by locals, race to control wind-driven flames two miles wide. No apparatus locally available, water supply strained, and fear of widespread destruction looms as flames spread toward Bourne.

Forest Fire Ravages Land Between Cataumet and Sandwich

A forest fire starting in Cataumet this morning has burned a 15 mile by 1 to 4 mile tract, not under control. More than 100 Sandwich workers are fighting the blaze, which reached Great Hollow Hill and moved northeast toward the town, with backfires set along main roads to curb it.

Fires Raze Acres Near Haverhill. Homes Threatened

April 15 Haverhill reports extensive field and forest fires across Nicholeville and Birch Brow. About 75 acres burned in total, damaging woodlands and market cordwood. Fire units fought flames for hours, narrowly avoiding dwelling damage before control around 7 PM.
