One hundred thirty residents of 109 Sterling Street Roxbury Crossing endure nightly fear as a seventh arson attempt prompts state and city police to guard the block A blonde firebug described as a maniac is being sought nationwide for the attacks on the Roxbury Crossing block.
Middlesex County grand jury returned secret indictments totaling 15 against the bandit gang. Earl Tug Wilson Sally Doyle Gilbert Crosby and David J. Eagan faced nine counts. Bail for Doyle girl case reduced to four thousand dollars as arrests continue and other suspects are rounded up.
In East Cambridge Probate Court yesterday Ezra C H Hartford of Boston faced Charles Mitchell after a scuffle with Mrs Helen C Hartford present. Mrs Hartford of Brookline filed suit against her husband for separate maintenance.
Irish tenor John McCormack, recently ill with a septic throat, will undergo another procedure to drain pus from his throat. Dr. A C Du Pont and Dr. Harmon Smith report gradual improvement but no singing for months. He plans to return to Ireland if health allows, after initial discharge conditions improve.
A concrete retaining wall 300 feet long and 10 feet high near an apartment house collapsed into the Mill River late tonight due to high water. The incident caused a loud crash that startled the city but, so far as is known, did not result in serious damage.
Police Commissioner Wilson will meet his official family at 3 pm Monday at police headquarters in Pemberton square. He is expected to outline policies and hold a heart to heart talk with department leaders. J Paul Canty, for two years with the Boston Record and Advertiser and formerly a special writer for the Boston Post, was named by District Attorney Thomas C. OBrien to the messenger and special clerk role. The appointment was confirmed by Chief Justice Rugg. Canty, of 3 Hardell Terrace Porchester, with wife and eight children, is brother to Captain Daniel J Canty and former secretary George Canty and ex-representative William A Canty.
An explosion at Beacon Oil Company plant in Everett injures eight workers seven with severe burns and tears through a door. Harry Vokes former vaudeville partner in Ward and Vokes is dying at Massachusetts General Hospital from injuries. The blast occurred yesterday and origin remains unexplained as pumps and other facilities were wrecked.
Washington April 14 President Harding is believed to favor moving tariff legislation before the soldiers' bonus in the Senate. Senate leaders reportedly agree. The tariff debate opens next Thursday as the finance committee reviews the bonus bill, with possible major changes anticipated before Senate consideration in about two weeks.
Field's Corner officers rushed to Adams Street where a woman, unnamed, hung outside a first story window with the upper sash jammed across her legs. After a tense rescue, she was freed and lowered to the ground as onlookers cheered.
A late night holdup on the Arlington and Winchester line of the Eastern Massachusetts Street Railway was foiled when two automobiles arrived as three thieves targeted operator Timothy Green. Lieutenant Theodore Parker of the Everett fire department suffered knee injuries when a fire engine struck an electric car on Ferry street. Driver Edward A. Garrity remained unhurt as the engine, badly damaged, stopped after the crash near car tracks. Parker was taken to his home for treatment.
Roy Mahoney began emptying 200 bottles of home brewed beer into a bathtub as punishment for intoxication after a $10 fine could not be paid. Judge Wappick ordered he must pour each bottle into the tub without touching the beer, letting it flow down the drain when the tub is full. A police captain stood by.
