A Boston aldermanic committee reports current prison awaiting trial facilities violate decency with dark crowded cells, poor air, vile sanitation, and shared spaces for men and women. Recommends tearing down most stations and rebuilding at a cost over a million dollars to meet modern standards.
A city committee faults station house air in use and clears police of blame. It urges three items in the annual loan bill: an $80,000 courthouse and police station for Charlestown, another $80,000 for East Boston, and a $65,000 courthouse for South Boston. The report favors passage to start improving prisoner conditions.
In Asheville North Carolina on April 14 a fire left the Kenilworth Inn a charred ruin. Out of town guests fled to other hotels and stories spread of escapes in night attire. One young woman walked three miles barefoot in a night robe and kimono to reach Asheville. Many guests lost jewelry as a patrol guards the ruins.
A 240 stone diamond chain 72 inches long, presented by Kidder Peabody & Co. of Boston, was among notable gifts at the wedding of Miss Harriet Stewart Brown and Baltimore banker T S Taller.
Alan M. Fay a young stock broker killed himself in a narrow alley off Berwick Park yesterday morning beneath the window of Miss Josefa Peenicnik. He had been jilted by a society girl he was to marry this spring after she saw him with another companion at a hotel. Despite his pleas for forgiveness the woman refused further contact.
A 20 percent bread price hike is proposed by major Massachusetts bakers from the Master Bakers Association of Massachusetts. The plan, prompted by higher flour costs due to Chicago grain speculation, aims to avoid closures as the meeting convenes this afternoon.
Fay, frustrated by rejection from Miss Peenicnik after seeking solace with a cafe companion, returned home to write a suicide note and then killed himself with five pistol shots in the early hours. Witnesses include Officer Magee and David J. Fox, who heard the shots and saw Fay fall. The incident followed distress over business losses and a reduced allowance.
The Master Bakers Association plans to cut the 10 and 5 cent loaves by 2 and 1 ounces respectively, keeping the same trade names. A leading baker notes rising flour costs and wheat speculation push prices higher while bakers barely break even.

Mrs. Sebastian M. Gahm formerly Miss Johanna Anderson of 15 Delle Avenue Roxbury spent last night in tears and wondered what became of the husband who had promised lifelong fidelity just hours after their marriage.
Miss Anderson wed 20 year old Gahm after meeting at a dance in Kossuth Hall. The couple obtained a license, married on Davis Street, and Gahm vanished after a confrontation with Anderson brothers. Relatives traced his claimed Roxbury address to no avail, while Mrs Gahm stays with a relative as investigation continues.
Mary Morrill is believed dead after reportedly leaping from a wharf into the Powow River in Amesbury. Frank Dow, night watchman at Biddle-Smart Automobile Works, said he saw her jump and tried to aid her with a plank. Police expect an autopsy to determine if death was by accident or crime.
Mrs. Morrill, once married to Charles Morrill and housekeeper to George A. Bartlett, vanished before drowning her body found near a coal barge at the wharf. Dow reported hearing a woman’s screams and seeing Mrs. Morrill leap into the water, with Bartlett and townsfolk aiding police in the tense search.
The forecast for New England indicates partly cloudy conditions in the west with rain in the east on Thursday, cooler in the east and south portions Friday, then partly cloudy and slightly warmer in the west. Moderate north to east winds are expected.
