Clarence Murphy Seeks Habeas Corpus Over Ex Post Facto Claim
Clarence Murphy, embezzling clerk of Salem Savings Bank, petitions the U S Circuit for a writ of habeas corpus to gain release from Charlestown prison. He argues his embezzlements occurred before the 1898 indeterminate sentence act, so his May 18% sentence should not apply due to the U S constitution against ex post facto laws. Judge Putnam ordered notice returnable April 27.

Market ends higher after late rally on Cuba talk
Strong buying emerged in the afternoon lifting a fractionally lower start as rumors circulated that Spain might propose buying Cuba. Copper and tobacco stocks drew heavy activity with short interests under pressure and loans rising to high rates. Local shipping and towboat news redirected harbor activity as vessels and crews adjusted to new assignments and government work.
