Mayor Beck told a Post representative that at least three fires in the northeast tenement district were set after the original blaze began. He said a trusted merchant saw incendiaries at work and that State police chief Silas P. Smith is pursuing corroborating information with possible convictions in sight.

Underwriters estimate a six million dollar loss from the Chelsea fire and expect not all will be paid. Some destroyed property was uninsured, and the exact amount the insurers will cover remains to be determined in a few days. An approximate coverage may be around four and a half million dollars.
