Newport Rhode Island April 12. The steamer Conani cut ashore in the outer harbor this morning and was floated this afternoon. The rock she struck was a loose granite block and part of the old spindle remains in the hull. The rudder and forward planking were splintered. No rock removal was attempted. She will be towed to Providence for repairs. A sailboat nearly grounded tonight for the same reason as the bell on Rose Island light failed to ring.

Queenstown reports the Danish steamer Danmark was abandoned by its crew after sinking conditions were observed on April 8 in latitude 46 North longitude 87 West. The ship of 2260 tons from Christiania to New York carried 549 passengers and a crew of 40, operated by the Thingvalla line, with Captain Knudsen aboard.
