Prominent Boston merchants voiced vigorous protests against property tax Increases during a City Hall hearing held by the Board of Assessors. Critics charged that large banking and brokerage houses and wealthy trustees escape taxes on substantial taxable property.
Business leaders criticize assessor work as biased, with claims of over‑assessment in the business district while others say property there is under‑valued. Merchants cite numerous cases of assessments not merely at full value.
Victor Brusendorff of 20 Paisley Park reported to Dorchester police that his house was entered yesterday and nearly $1000 worth of jewels and clothing were taken. Entry was through a rear window with a putty knife and the back door was opened to admit others. A partial list includes a walrus handbag, several women's suits and a sealskin coat, a man's suit and trousers, jewelry, silver items, clocks, candlesticks, opera glasses, and hair brushes.
An old promotional card for Castle Square Hotel lists manager Charles E Sleeper at Tremont and Chandler Streets. It touts European plan rooms with private baths in every room, long distance telephone, no tip dining room, and a large front with 1 mile frontage travel amenities. Rates per day include 1.50 for single, 2.00 for double, and 2.50 to 3.00 for alcove double suites. Baggage transferred free.
At a Symphony Hall banquet closing the Institute's 50th anniversary, President Maclaurin announced an absolute pledge from alumni to fund a suitable site if the State contributes. He named three possible locations within easy reach of the Rogers building steps.
It is said the Allston Golf Club site would have been announced at the banquet if not for a hitch. land in Chestnut Hill and Cambridge also mentioned though Cambridge is largely ruled out. The exact locations are not specified.
A crowd of about 100 watched James L Williamson, 38, a jeweller of 1575 Washington Street, die after being ground between a train and the platform at Trinity Court station on attempted boarding. He died en route to Massachusetts General Hospital. body sent to North Grove Street morgue. Williamson left a widow and four children aged 3 to 11.
A crowded South Station platform witnessed a man chase a moving 41 10 train from Trinity court. He slipped, was crushed between the car wheel and platform, and died before arriving at Massachusetts General Hospital. The victim, Mr. Williamson of 157 Washington Street, was a nine year jewelry business veteran and Mason.
Boston lawmakers amend the Plan 2 charter, approved by the House 153 to 70, returning to party primaries under the party system. Supporters warn Plan 2 will be ruined and vow to fight the bill, charging a politician coalition aims to defeat the charter.
Grafton Cushing of Ward 11 denounced the bill and accused the politicians of the blame. He described the leaders of the Republican city committee as men of small stature.
Party designations replace nonpartisanship and party primaries replace petitions. Councilmen elected by wards instead of at large, with twenty seven members rather than nine. Salary lowered to 1200 from 1500. One member per ward, with wards 20 and 24 receiving two each. He could not dent the forces aligned against the old charter. Continued on page 6 second column.

Boston Nationals host Strooklyn while Boston Americans play Washington. Red Sox Vannigans defeat Harvard 2 to 0. Boxton Nationals beat Yale 3 to 1. Hep Vannigans shut out Lynn 5 to 0. Henri Renaud and Bob Fowler entered Marathon. No other clear results or dates provided.
At a spirited South End convention of the Railway Mail Clerks Association of New England C H Quackenbush was elected president by 563 votes to 328. Opponent A C Walton of Jamaica Plain refused to yield contending with a court order and faced arrest for contempt while remaining in the chair.
Walton claims the election of his opponent will be contested by the National Railway Mail Clerks Association executive committee. He alleges officials aided his opponents and that Quackenbush and Slocum were dismissed from federal service for opposing his gag law repeal. Slocum and Quackenbush had been involved in leadership roles and were later dropped from the union.
Both leagues start with opening games as the Red Sox visit Washington and the Nationals host Brooklyn. The Red Sox defeat Harvard 4 to 2 while Yale falls to Princeton 3 to 1.
