A late night blaze at Thompson's Point, Portland, gutted the Maine Central railroad car shops. The wooden complex burned rapidly, leaving only the roundhouse intact. Loss estimated at 150000 dollars, with several cars and two locomotives destroyed.
In Salem during Mademoiselle Mars, Lily Langtry spotted a fire from defective stage wiring near the proscenium. She lifted a rug, crossed the stage, and extinguished the blaze without breaking character, calming the audience as she explained there was no real danger.
Police report two more burglaries in Back Bay as false keys gained entry at 1075 Boylston Street. Mrs Farnham discovered two solitaire diamond rings and $40 missing after rooms were left in order. In a separate incident at 54 St Stephens Street intruders forced a rear window but fled when confronted by 32 agents.
April 10 strike hearing revealed claims of a wage regulation combine among Lowell cotton mills. Agent Southworth identified Arthur T. Lyman of Boston as president of multiple Lowell mills including Bigelow Carpet Mills Boott and Tremont and Suffolk mills, with Massachusetts and Georgia mill interests and Pacific Mills of Lawrence. He cited old machinery as a handicap for the Lowell mills.
Lowell cotton manufacturers defend wage levels before the State Board of Conciliation and Arbitration. William S. Southworth testifies on mill operations, competition, and price controls amid cross examination. The hearing, held at City Hall, probes whether a northern New England “cotton combine” exists and how wages are set.
In Lynn on April 10 attorney William H. Niles for Miss Carrie M. Corson accused most of the Ingalls School teachers of intimate relations with Principal Fred P. Batchelder and claimed a forged letter repudiating former charges. He denounced witnesses as perjurers and clashed with the committee over Miss Corson’s veracity. The hearing continued amid heated exchanges and a staged exit.
Buffalo verdict finds Arthur R. Pennell died March 10, 1903 from injuries after an automobile plunged into Gehres stone quarry. Court notes cannot determine if crash was accident or design.
