He pleaded not guilty and posted 3000 dollars bail. Thomas Mc Crystal and John Cooney, alleged in O Malley’s employ, faced similar charges, pleaded not guilty, and were jailed for lack of bail.

General J M Madison Drake editor of the Daily Leader and Zouave commander was arrested by a United States Marshal in Euizapeth New Jersey on a charge of opening a letter and abstracting its contents. The letter to Captain Corri carried a 200 check from the New Jersey Jockey Club for the Zouaves. Corri, Drake’s former ally, accuses him amid claims the motive is personal spite.
Governor of Massachusetts asked the Treasury Department for a refund of the direct tax paid by the state totaling 700,894 dollars. The request was filed today in Washington, D.C., as part of the national tax settlement.
