Lovering Appointment Sparks Democratic Backing Across Massachusetts
The Senate confirmed Lovering and he outlines plan to study office, pursue reforms, and back reform. He met President Cleveland and expects loyal support from Democrats nationwide for Cleveland’s nomination. Locally, Lynn leaders foresee strengthened Republican unity for Cleveland Lovering reform, with Grand Army support and planned broad congratulations.
No Opposition to Lovering Appointment Sparks Debate
A prominent Independent comments that Mr. Lovering lacks responsibility for the hostile convention that nominated him for governor. He argues the marshalship differs from other offices and could be well filled by Lovering, while Independents might have preferred General Banks. The piece also notes lingering criticism of Lovering but overall tolerance of his appointment. Washington report follows on direct tax bill standoff.
