In the direct primary, Colonel achieved a sweeping win with a large plurality, reportedly around 125,000, carrying key districts once aligned with President Taft and supporting Cannon. McKinley’s district managers faced a decisive setback as results favored the Colonel.
In Pittsburg Colonel Roosevelt learns Illinois primary results after a speech and says he is pleased but will not issue a statement tonight. Speaker Clark defeats Governor Wilson on a preference ticket by about a two to one margin. Roosevelt led Taft by four to one in some districts. woman suffrage lost.
The Boston Red Sox made their unofficial debut at the new field in a snow swept afternoon clash, defeating Harvard 2 to 0 as gusts and flurries swirled around the teams.
On a wet field the Red Sox of 1912 demonstrated cautious play against Harvard. Jake Stahl’s squad, favored for victory, showed speed and defense while Harvard pitchers managed a rare strike. After six and a half innings the score remained low as both teams agreed to halt play, with no further scoring.
The letter argues that a $50,000 guaranty would free Boston Opera from financial trouble and asks citizens to support the ongoing high quality company. EBEN D. JORDAN appeals to shared benefits for residents, children, and the city, noting a winter without opera would be dire. April 9, 1912.
In Louisville on April 9 Taft secured nine uncontested delegates from Kentucky districts with Roosevelt winning one. Roosevelt supporters walked out of the eighth and tenth district sessions while Taft factions left the eleventh. Two conventions per district selected, one Taft instructed and one Roosevelt. Taft had six delegates from the previous day, totaling 15 uncontested.
Wilmont A Barclay 35 of 52 Revere Street was stabbed in the back during a card game at 21 Camden Street South End. He was taken to City Hospital and conceded he might have erred about clubs being trumps.
Frederick O. Beach, charged with assault with intent to kill his wife, departed London with Mrs. Beach for Paris after word of a warrant emerged. They planned a London stay until Friday before continuing to Paris to consult William K. Vanderbilt. American embassy and Scotland Yard knew nothing of the warrant. Lawyers later said Beach would return to America to face the charges.
The Museum of Fine Arts trustees adopted a resolution on Professor A. Lawrence Rotch’s death and accepted from Francis Bartlett a deed conveying Chicago real estate income to the Museum. The estate value runs about 1.5 million dollars.
A real estate lease valued at 198 years at escalating annual rents was designated to fund purchases of art for the museum. Mr. Bartlett, in a April 6 letter, pledged income over $50,000 annually to acquire works approved by curators and experts. The board commended his long service and generosity, placing his name on the gift.
Chicago headlines report Roosevelt sweeping Illinois primaries with a statewide lead of at least 100 000 votes and carrying 56 of 58 delegates. Clark trails Wilson about two to one as Roosevelt dominates Cook county and most districts except one.
A fire at tenement 117 Brighton Street, of suspected incendiary origin, sent two alarms and prompted a leap from the second story into a policemens human net. Fourteen occupants escaped with narrow margins as flames spread to the roof.
Several individuals climbed onto the fire escape of the Pea body settlement house on Poplar Street and were aided by unknown parties as they moved from the roof. Additional details are unavailable in the fragment.
Lowell April 9 Agents from several local mills closed by strike traveled to Boston for a conference with mill treasurers. Reported no major progress and the strike remains stalled. Bread distributed to strikers. I W W provided flour and fuel. roughly 15 000 workers still out.
At the national convention in New York on April 9 Arthur Helmer Reimer of Boston a ladies tailor was unanimously named for President and August Gilhaus of New York a stationary engineer for Vice President. Daniel De Leon spoke for the platform which condemns Haywood style organizers over the Lawrence strike. Final adoption postponed until tomorrow with printed copies to members. twenty eight delegates attended.
