William J. Bryan spoke to about 300 at the San Marco Hotel piazza in St Augustine Florida. A crowd surge toppled a 40 by 40 foot Piazza section sending hundreds to the ground with many injured though Bryan himself suffered no serious injuries. The planned reception was canceled.
Knoxville worst fire in city history destroys the heart of downtown inclining wholesale and retail firms. Loss estimated at 1 to 1.5 million with about 69 percent insured. At least one known death among Hotel Knox guests. several others reported missing. Fire spread rapidly aided by high winds. dynamite blast and cannon used to halt flames. Chattanooga aid arrived. extensive property damage and mass debris removal underway.
Officers doubt a Patrolman Donovan is related to the Lawrence suspect. Inquiry at Station Four found a Donov an on day shift and the desk sergeant had not heard of a Donovan with a brother in the case.
It is believed J C M Bogle may die from burns after inhaling flames in the hotel fire. Five or six others were burned and several suffocated in halls. W H Mitchell jumped to a bank building, and W S Johnson climbed down water pipes. Dead include A F E Weeks R W Hopkins Robinson S E Williams. Injured include J C M Bogle D M Dean Tom B Peck Lieutenant Hood Claude Harris Policeman Asquith Policeman Duncan Fire Chief MelIntosh W H Kephart.
A Knoxville dispatch reports the remains of E. Williams and W. E. Holloway believed buried in the Hotel Knox ruins. Holloway a Newport Tenn. merchant and Williams a Springfield Mass. capitalist were in the hotel when the fire broke out and disappeared from view.
At the north of the railroad between San Cristo bal and San Juan River a Spanish Aragon Battalion encountered patriots descending the hills for vegetables. Official report says seven were killed and seven captured they will be tried for raiding the plantation.
A man claiming to be Richard Donovan of Boston, matching the Medford murder description, was arrested in Lawrence after conflicting stories. He claimed residence at 140 Tyler Street, but the alleged landlady denied knowing him. Medford officials were notified for identification.
The district’s grand jury is set to report tomorrow with strong evidence against seven men. Mayor Quincy and Superintendent Wells led an earnest probe through department books, creating a solid case. City Hall officials panic at the prospect of broader revelations and hint Clerk Mulvey will not be alone in trouble.
At School Street crossing in Lowell two men, Herbert Craven and Samuel Benson, were killed by an express train after the gate signal failed. Nathaniel Peabody escaped with a narrow near miss as his wagon and a drag were struck and the horses torn from the shafts. Fire and rescue crews reported the death of Craven and Benson dying moments after the collision.
