The Bijou Opera House in New York sold at auction for 62300 dollars to James L. Harrison but the buyer did not deposit 10 percent with the referee, so the sale was revoked and the property will be offered again next week.
In the House of Commons the lord advocate introduced a bill for local government in Scotland. It creates county councils elected by householders, merges boroughs under 7000 population into counties, and grants councils power over private bill legislation. It marks a step toward Home Rule with functions similar to English councils.
Henry M. Stanley’s letter to the Royal Geographical Society discussed at length. He describes devices by natives to hinder the expedition including pits with skewers, causing wounds and gangrene. Stanley labels natives “cunning rogues” and notes extortion ploys and famine pretense. He asserts the lake discovered in 1876 belongs to the Congo. A Zanzibar despatch denies Stanley and Emin Pasha moving toward Zanzibar.
London April 8 The Noordland bound for Red Star line emigrants were barred from landing after a collision near Beachy Head with the schooner Carrie Dingle. Sixteen Englishmen forced their way ashore and complained of the steamer’s poor passenger quarters amid repairs in Southampton.
In Paris the Senate debated regulating its court procedure before General Boulanger's trial. M Buffet's motion was rejected 177 to 72 after minister Thevenet disputed delaying tactics. The Mot d Ordre claims Belgian authorities ordered Boulanger to quit Belgium with a Brigh ton destination rumor denied by telegram from Brussels.
Excitement grows as the Rhode Island General Assembly resumes voting for Senator with Dixon and Wetmore factions in contested aftermath. Democrats hold House, Republicans control Senate. results could shift governor race. Bribery cases fuel contests, with prices from five to twenty dollars cited for byelections. Cuicano April 8 a Chicago election is declared illegal under state law. The Supreme Court ruled that while annexed areas were added to townships, they were not city territory. Election timing and 20 day notice are implicated, risking a vacancy or a new election as the Republican administration weighs legal options.
A Norfolk storm lasting from Saturday night into Sunday caused extensive damage and uninsured losses estimated at 150000 to wholesalers and tobacconists. Vessels ashore near Sea Tack, including the four mast schooner Benjamin F Poole and the Emma F Hart, were reported with crews rescued. One survivor was noted from a two masted schooner. The William Lawrence arrived at York River with updates on grounded ships and anchor losses near Back River. The City of Gloucester waited at anchor near Gloucester Point while the Old Dominion line steamer moved offshore.
Ella C. White, music teacher, allegedly borrowed between eight and fifteen thousand dollars from Elmira residents by promising profitable investments and by signing notes with fictitious names or signatures. She spent the funds in bucket shop speculation and was arrested on four warrants for second degree forgery. Her father, a Susquehanna Erie shops employee, transferred property of about two thousand six hundred dollars.
Deputy reports a 13 year old son of William G Martin a provisions dealer of East Dedham was injured when a bag of oats snagged by shears caused the shears to slip into his right eye. Doctors fear if inflammation does not set in the sight may be saved. The boy previously lost sight in his left eye three years ago from a stone chip at Greenwich R. I.
A Boston and Maine express train at Market street crossing in Lynn struck and fatally crushed Benjamin Bowser, a 40 year old barber from South Common and Shepard streets. He had traveled to Boston seeking help and was well known in the area.
A massive blaze devastated Smithfield North Carolina yesterday afternoon destroying nearly every structure except the county courthouse, jail, and a few homes. Loss estimated over 100000 dollars, largely insured, with origin believed accidental at the S R and J R Morgan carriage factory.
The third annual joint exhibition by the Society of Amateur Photographers of New York the Camera Club of Boston and the Photographic Society of Philadelphia began at the Academy of Fine Arts. New York on April 8 reports a world tour banquet for A. G. Spalding and his party of American baseball players at Delmonico's. Mark Twain gave a witty speech, Yale graduate J. H. Twitchell offered a prayer, and about 250 guests enjoyed a nine course meal. Attendees included Mayors Chapin of Brooklyn and Cleveland of Jersey City, Chauncey Depew, Daniel Dougherty, Judge Howland, Erastus Wiman, and figures such as Roosevelt and DeWolf Hopper. Ex-League President Mills presided. letters of regret came from governors and mayors.
The Harvard side led by McLeod and Howland faced Boston in a frigid South End game. Mumford Dean and Wood performed well in the infield, while Kelly showed life for the Boston club. Radbourn and Sowders pitched effectively as the score lingered with few runs.
