The will of Frederick D. Tappen directs executors to invest his estate solely in securities listed by The Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York. It cites his long career in banking and as a trusted, conservative financial leader amid repeated market panics and landmark years of loan certificates.
In Tuscumbia Alabama on April 6 six men died and four were severely wounded as Sheriff Gassaway tried to arrest Will Reynolds a colored desperado. Reynolds fired from a Winchester killing deputies and men, while the mob and Wheeler Rifles repeatedly fired, burning houses to force his surrender. Reynolds’ body was later recovered from the burning debris. sheriff and brother gravely wounded.
In Amherst Court House Virginia last night a mob of about 200 masked men abducted James Carter after he shot Don Thomas. Carter was hanged to a tree and shot with 35 bullets. A coroner's inquest found death by hanging and gunshot wounds caused by unknown parties.
Captain Elbridge G. Martin, 58, a veteran pilot aboard the Liberty No 3, died suddenly likely of apoplexy while on watch near Cape Cod. A Massachusetts native, he served in the First Massachusetts Regiment, followed his father as a noted pilot, and was secretary treasurer of the National Pilots' Association and Boston Pilots' Relief Society. He is survived by a widow, a daughter, and son Frank Martin.
Alarm sounded shortly after 9 yesterday morning for a fire at Boothby Surgical Hospital, 1 and 3 Worcester square. Origin traced to a clothes chest on the third floor. Firemen arrived too late to stop some headway but all patients were moved to safety on the first floor. Patrolmen Cassidy, Garland, Kingston, Hunt and Knowles assisted in rescues. Loss not to exceed $500.
Andrew Redding, a lodger at 1 Pme place, was exposed to illuminating gas after a partially closed cock leaked gas into his room turning it dangerous. Inmates noticed the odor and he was taken to City Hospital in critical condition, with a good chance of recovery.
Walter Bennett 16 Lester Carroll 15 and Ernest Tripp 15 left Lawrence for the plains to hunt a so called red man. They were reported missing and located by Patrolman Mc Connell at South station about 7 pm. They admit planning a bold venture with $72 total, Bible, loaded revolvers, cartridges, pemmican and dime novels. They will be sent home today.
A man who died after a fall at the subway station stairway earlier in the week has been identified as John H. Collins of 56 Brosdwt, Revere. The identification was provided by Collins’s wife and daughters.
Nicholas J. O Gorman of Tremont Street surrendered at Station 5 declaring he was a thief and an outcast driven by a treacherous romance. He admitted numerous robberies and crimes, blaming his lover Susie Campbell for his downfall, and described his past in the South End leading to his arrest last winter. He gave details to Patrolman Ryan, spoke of years in jail, and said the station is his only way to avoid execution or suicide. He also recounted past acts of forgery and housebreaking while drinking heavily. In another tragedy, Mrs Alice Newcomb and Miss Donna Parker drowned in the Charles River after a canoe accident near the Brookline Pumping Station. Bates and Franz tried to rescue them but both women died. Bates, a 48-year-old piano warehouse salesman, survived, as did Franz, a 46-year-old cutlery grinder.
The Boston Weather Bureau issued a storm bulletin last evening warning a northwest storm from New Haven to Portsmouth with an advisory to Eastport. The storm centers over western Pennsylvania moving eastward with brisk to high southerly winds tonight, shifting to strong northwest winds Monday morning. Forecaster J. W. Smith notes generally cloudy Monday with possible light showers, colder Monday night, and fair colder Tuesday.
News of the sad tragedy reached the city as three principals resided nearby. At 30 Dartmouth street the first information arrived at 9 o clock via the Post reporter. Mrs Frazier the landlady was out visiting and only upon her return an hour later were the identities of two dead women learned by the writer and Patrolman Underhill of Division 6. Mrs Frazier nearly collapsed and medical help was considered. She recovered enough to recount the identities and events leading to the fatal excursion. Alice Newcomb of 31 Claremont Park and Franz met Donna Parker and Bates at the house around noon.
