New York April 6 General Grant's condition was easy last night and many expect he may live a week. He slept quietly at midnight and spoke of his chances, saying he might pull through but feared a strangling spell could hasten his end. Dr Shrady noted his improvement compared with a week ago.
In River Massachusetts today Judge Staples presided a test case in the superior court. William J Hariey sues Bay State Beneficiary association of Westfield to recover 5900 on a policy issued on Owen Connors. Connors held multiple policies totaling 15000 from several mutual societies. The defense contends fraud or illegality in obtaining the insurance. Thirteen witnesses testified for the plaintiff and the case is expected to be lengthy with many technical points.
Duxbury Massachusetts on April 6 held a town meeting with officials listed including Moderator H. E. Smith and Town Clerk Josiah Peterson. Voted yes on license, approved appropriations totaling 20 ... detailed sums for support of poor schools highway repairs snow removal railroad loans and other municipal needs.
Friends say Mr. Frelinghuysen was gravely ill for long, concealing his condition. A State Department official notes he signed most official mail at home during his last three months, was too weak to attend the department, and often revived with water to his face and wrists amid a year of intense pain.
Officer Sullivan halted two suspicious men, Joe Quigley and Walter Turr, alias Linden and Clough, from Lynn. Pittsburg April 6 The River coal miners strike ends in favor of the strikers with 6000 miners resuming work at higher wages. Walton & Co conceded the raise Saturday, prompting a domino effect as two thirds of the mines restart and the rest expected to follow by week’s end. Railroad miners’ situation unchanged.
In Albany on April 6 a group of canal boatmen formed an association to build and maintain floating and stationary grain warehouses in New York Brooklyn and Buffalo. Articles of incorporation were filed with the secretary of state naming New York City as the principal office and a 50 year term for the corporation.
A Washington dispatch reports prominent Illinois Democrats will travel to New York from Springfield tonight or tomorrow to urge Gen. Binck, commissioner of pensions, to run against Gen. Logan for the U S Senate. Mr. Black could secure three or four Republican votes and the full Democratic strength.
In Dover New Hampshire on April 6 three young men entered the county jail corridor to offer liquor to prisoners. They caused a disturbance when barred and were arrested by police. They face arraignment in court tomorrow on charges of bringing liquor to a prisoner, a offense carrying up to six months in jail.
In Hartford on April 6 Olaf Montaesen an inmate at the state prison died by hanging in his cell. He was sentenced from New Haven in 1884 to five years for burglary and had no friends in this country.
Hartford dispatch reports the state house approved an anti dynamite measure banning manufacture sale or possession of dangerous explosives without licenses and a probate law revision. The item notes exceptions for especially pure and safe stimulants and references O Taylor's Old Bourbon and Pure Rye Whiskies sold in bottles through druggists and grocers.
A Washington dispatch reports the president and cabinet favor a final removal during Senate recess, not restoration of pay if a successor fails confirmation. This could trigger many appointments of internal revenue collectors postmasters and consuls. Details on Boston offices remain unsettled and Pillsbury may not replace Slack. Calais Maine voters chose George M Hanson mayor by 29 votes, the first Democratic chief since 1871. Hanson won wards 1 2 and 3 with large margins while ward 4 went to Georges Kaish by 26, a Democratic gain. Independent E H McAllister won ward 6 by five as Republicans saw losses overall.

The funeral for City Engineer Henry M. Wightman was held at his home 441 Shawmunt avenue at o clock Monday afternoon with Rev Dr Phillips Brooks officiating. Attending were Mayor O'Brien and council committees on the engineer's department and improved sewerage, Desimond Fitzgereld, superintendent western division of the department, among others.
