West Springfield man arrested for Round Hill murder

Bertram G. Spencer of West Springfield, 28, was arrested and charged with the murder of Martha Blackstone at Mrs. Sarah J. Dow's home in Round Hill last Thursday night. Mrs. Dow, her daughter Lucy, and Miss Harriet Dow identified him as the intruder who shot Miss Blackstone and wounded Miss Dow.

Fire Devastates North Pownal. Clerk Buried Amid Flames

April 5. North Adams reports a major fire in North Pownal Vermont threatening to wipe the town off the map. Frank Eldridge, a clerk in Mrs. Whipple’s general store, died of injuries after diving through flames to save ledgers. Fire destroyed the Whipple homestead, church, halls, four homes, and the Donaldson building. dynamite failed to contain the blaze amid high winds. The blaze caused about $100,000 in damage and prompted aid from Bennington Williamstown and local fire crews. The cotton mill, a major employer, was feared endangered as midnight neared. Eldridge is in North Adams Hospital with head injuries and a fractured skull.

Attorney for Russell Estate Denounces First Claimant

Daniel Blake Russell No. 1 the Dakota claimant to a share in the Russell fortune was held up to the court as a postmaster actor fakir and a humorist in the arraignment by Attorney Nason for the respondents during yesterday's arguments. Nason ridiculed the claimant's efforts to prove identity and asserted the petitioner was James Rousseau. He claimed Rousseau is dead but implied his presence inside the enclosure as he faced the claimant. The five hour session drew a large crowd with many veterans of the case lining up hours before court to gain admission.

Burglar Tools Found After Home Search in West Springfield

Police found two black silk masks two loaded revolvers and extensive jewelry at Spencer's home 47 Porter avenue West Springfield. Mrs Dow and her daughter identified a green Indian head belt and a pearl brooch from the loot as items stolen the night of the murder.
