Chicago papers mark winter crop 88 injuries soaring

The Chicago papers regard the crop of winter 88 seriously injured. The steeplechases at La Marche near Paris began three Sundays ago with auspicious start. He enjoyed an income for many years.

The Gen. Marion from Bath, Mo. aided the Hattie of Brooklyn with a damaged rudder and leaking hold, delivering the Hattie’s captain and crew to Philadelphia. In New London the 14th Massachusetts battery sailed for Washington to join Virginia fortifications. Gold and cash receipts at the Custom House reached 256,000 in gold certificates. Col Hughes and Adjutant McDowell swore allegiance at Sparta, Tenn. Gen Pleasanton arrived in St Louis to report to Gen Rosecrans. Butterfield denied issuing Gettysburg orders without authority.

Fire at Winthrop House destroys Masonic halls

A night blaze at Winthrop House corner Tremont and Boylston Streets destroyed Masonic halls on the upper floors and damaged the hotel below. Regalia jewels and paintings including portraits of Washington Warren and other Grand Masters were lost. total Masonic losses around fifty thousand dollars. The hotel, housing around one hundred people, suffered extensive water damage but most occupants escaped in night attire. Fire crews fought the flames for hours and by 3 am control was established.
