Miss Rowena Hill aged about eighty, a lodger at 164 Newbury Street, died two hours after her clothing caught fire from a gas burner. She had just lit a burner to heat water when the fringe on her dress ignited as she passed by.
A rapid blaze engulfed Miss Hill prompting Mrs. Taylor to raise an alarm. Lodgers smothered the flames with a blanket after a carpet and curtains caught fire in Miss Hill’s room. Fire crews were dispatched but not needed as the fire was quickly controlled.
A measure introduced in the Massachusetts Legislature at the request of Metropolitan Life Insurance Company aims to let insurers of industrial policies offer cheaper rates to wage earners. Employees of one employer may insure in groups of 100 or more and pay premiums through the employer or an authorized officer.
The proposal, supported by wage earners, seeks wholesale buying via an insurance company to cut premiums by removing collection costs. Legislation already passed in Massachusetts and similar bills in New York and New Jersey seek to permit lower rates without discriminatory pricing. Earners are urged to study the bill and help push its passage.
Business leaders in this city remain puzzled by the failed abolition of outward freight rates from New England. Some businessmen suspect the move aimed to influence merger legislation in the state Legislature.
Benjamin J Lang a pianist teacher conductor and organizer dies at 71 after a brief illness. Born in Salem December 28 1837 he helped boost Boston as a music center and was praised by Liszt as his best pupil.
Mrs Mollie Moore, 23, leapt from Neponset street bridge into the Charles River as a crowd watched. Fred Langin, 23, jumped after her, held her afloat amid a brief struggle, and both were pulled ashore with the woman unconscious. Police and a Nutting boathouse crew aided in rescue as Moore had recently arrived from Milo Junction Maine after separating from her husband.

Middlesex grand jury to indict Peter C. Delorey and Dionysius Syryropoulos alias James Mantir for the murder of Annie Mullins. The Greek man is charged with the actual murder after an attempted assault at Squires Field Arlington on the night of March 27, 1908. Delorey faces charges of aiding the attempted assault, concealing the crime and aiding in the escape.
In Naples on April 4 ex president Theodore Roosevelt sails toward Mombasa aboard the Admiral. The ship lies festooned with flags and gifts arrive for Roosevelt while officials greet him. He will likely stay briefly, then dine with the Duke and Duchess of Aosta and tour local sights before continuing.
Washington April 4 Robert Bacon recently secretary of State is Taft’s choice for ambassador to France. He can accept the post if he can arrange his private affairs to serve without serious loss.
April 4. Hon Edward C. Mead of Somerville and P B Bond were seriously injured in a touring car collision with a telegraph pole. They were rushed to Salem Hospital where Mead was listed in serious condition with severe head cuts. Mrs Mead sustained internal injuries and extensive bruising. Mead, former House member, is senior partner at Mead Mason Co.
President Eliot told The Post last night that he has not declined the British ambassadorship. The interview hints he may still accept and will soon start work on a new library plan.
A touring car from Newburyport to Boston swerved near Ipswich center and struck a telegraph pole. Mr Mead was hurled through the windshield and knocked insensible. Mr Bond, a friend staying with the Meads in Somerville, escaped with lighter injuries but is severely hurt. Mrs Mead was and others injured likely.
Washington reports Republican leaders say a special resolution will set April 10 for a vote on the Payne tariff bill. The measure would be protected from all but committee amendments while floor options allow votes on free lumber, protected barley, and protected hides.
Twenty six Republicans who began a revolt to block a vote on free lumber and push for greater protection for coal and iron ore were compelled to support a resolution or rule from the rules committee. Since yesterday afternoon they have been counseled by members of the ways and means committee and by the House.
