E C Swift of Chicago died at the Quincy House at 1 a m after a brief pneumonia illness. He contracted the disease while caring for a sick friend and neglected his own health. His daughter kept vigil beside him as both lungs were affected yesterday and recovery was impossible.
A major blaze at the four story Hotel Arnold owned by George Miller at 170 Union Street Lynn, occurred shortly before 2 AM, trapping many lodgers as exits were blocked. By 2 35 AM the ruins burned fiercely and no one inside could have escaped.
The legislature rejected abolishing capital punishment by a 132 to 68 vote, allowing the death penalty for first degree murder to remain. Amid a deadly Hotel Arnold fire, rescuers pulled twelve may have died among about 100 lodgers as flames gutted the building and firemen saved others.
