Battle Report From Buena Vista 1847 Front Lines

General Taylor reports decisive 5400 US troops repelled a 20,000 strong Mexican force at Buena Vista near Saltillo. After heavy fighting on Feb 23, enemy withdrew to Agua Nueva. US losses about 700 with large Mexican casualties. Includes Santa Anna exchange of prisoners and enlistment details.

Rifles Engage Enemy Near Vera Cruz in Early Action

In a camp near Vera Cruz dated March 12 morning, Mr Kendall reports that the Rifles under Col. Smith fought the enemy with brisk action. The opposing force gained a partial early success but was driven back with considerable loss.

Revolution in Mexico Emotions and Shifting Loyalties Reported

News from Mexico City via Vera Cruz to New Orleans through March reports ongoing fighting and government-vs-revolt tensions with one insurgent regiment returning to government control. A rumor called the pronunciamento de los Mugeres claims clergy women urged to withhold marital rights until church factions oppose clerical sequestration. Two government boats Enterprise and Pand la were snagged and lost in the Rio Grande, with machinery saved.

Conquest Authority Demands Open Ports in Mexico

A note to the Secretary of the Treasury states that after failed peace overtures, the United States asserts the right of the conqueror to levy duties on trade from Mexican ports under military control. It orders all ports in US possession to be opened to neutral and US commerce for non contraband goods, with prescribed duties as condition of trade during occupation.
