William B. Leeds son of Princess Anastasia of Greece became engaged to Princess Xenia 11 niece of King Constantine. Marriage expected in June likely in Athens the couple to reside in America. Schooner Evolution Wrecked in Nantucket Sound Squall

Early yesterday the two masted schooner Evolution under Captain A J Perry of Providence was wrecked in the lower end of Nantucket Sound while bound from Providence to Prior Cape Verde Islands. Her six crew were rescued yesterday afternoon by the Muskegat coast guard station crew.

Coast Guard Rescues Crew as Evolution Grounded Near Nantucket

Four men were taken aboard the coast guard cutter Acushnet while Captain Perry and another crew member were brought to Nantucket. The Evolution is believed to be a total loss on the shoals due to a squall that tore sails and left the vessel helpless. The schooner ran aground around 5 30 as rescue efforts were delayed by shoal waters and heavy seas. Keeper Fr W Howes and station crew finally attempted rescue in calmer seas. Remaining crew named: Charles Mendes, Joseph M Brito, Joaquin Gay, Joseph Frederio, Joseph Peivera, and Vincent Antonio, all of New Bedford.

Car Runs Down a Policeman in Back Bay

Patrolman William J. Gibbs of the Back Bay station was struck and severely injured while trying to stop a car at Commonwealth Avenue and Clarendon Street. The auto owned by Chester A. Bennett of Quincy carried Harriet Esterb rook of Newbury Street and Luther A. Bennett. The driver was Bennetts passenger, with the license in Bennett name while Esterbrook faced drunkenness charges and Bennett drunken driving allegations.

Sales Tax Recommended at 1 Percent for Three Years

A New York tax conference unanimously recommended enacting a 1 percent sales tax on all goods for three years. Henry J. Burton of Minneapolis, president of the Tax League of America, announced the plan. Annie Louise Cary, famed prima donna of 50 years past, died at her Norwalk home age 79. Widow of Charles M. Raymond, former New York banker, she had lived in Norwalk since 1883. Death due to infirmities of age.

Annie Louise Cary was born in Wayne Maine and began singing at Rowe Street Baptist Church Boston. She studied in Gorham Seminary and with Lyman W Wheeler before going to Europe in 1866. She debuted in Copenhagen in 1868 and performed with Christine Nilsson under Maurice Strakosch. Her New York debut came in 1870. she created Amneris in Aida in 1873, sang with Patti in 1874, returned to America in 1876, retired from opera in 1881, and finally left professional life after marrying Raymond in 1882.
