Flax Duty Fight Threatens New England Linen Industry

The Ways and Means Committee resists a proposed tariff rise on raw flax, arguing it hurts the small American linen sector. The duty would raise costs without expanding flax cultivation, which remains labor intensive and dependent on foreign fiber. European flax yields finer product, while U S mills struggle with limited supply. The linen industry, already burdened by raw-material taxes, seeks removal of hindrances to secure home-grown supply and protect related shoe-thread production.
