Fires Cause Heavy Losses Across Cities

The bulletin reports multiple fires from April 2 to April 8. The Territorial Insane asylum in YANKTON burned, with 54 patients and 3 deaths, losses around 10 000. Sperry Co flour mill and warehouse in Stockton burned, with large grain stocks and several injuries, losses near 200 000. Otter Lake Lapeer county in Michigan lost 4 500 000 feet of lumber, 75 000 in value. Dayton Washington Territory fire damaged half the business district, injuries and losses undetermined. Carr’s brickyard in Philadelphia burned, losses 18 000.

Becher and Becher Saved From Sunk Douro Collision

London press reports detail the Douro collision off Cape Finisterre with the Yrurac Bat. Becher and Lauy Becher were rescued, along with engineers and many passengers. £53,000 in specie aboard and 32 from the Douro and 19 from the Yrurac Bat saved. Mixed dispatches also note political and local incidents.

House Debates Extending Corporate Life of National Banks

In Washington on April 3 the House failed to suspend rules to set April 15 as a continuing special order for a bill to extend national banking associations. Critics opposed banks power and favored silver over banknotes. supporters argued for temporary continuation. The roll call was 102 yeas, 77 nays, not reaching two thirds.
