April 2 Underground campaign ends with Frederick A. Busse winning the Chicago mayoral election over Edward F. Dunne. Busse gains a 15 000 to 18 000 vote plurality. Dunne led a pro municipal ownership platform while Republicans backed recent council ordinances over his veto.
Voters approve ordinances granting 20 year franchises with city option to buy for 50 million dollars plus rehabilitation costs. A flat 5 cent fare and 55 percent of net profits go to the city amid a large turnout and sharp campaign contrasts. Mayor Dunne concedes a setback though vows municipal ownership will prevail in time as Hearst backed opposition collapsed.
Aid was summoned from Boston and Somerville after a general alarm fire at Hersey's factory on Main Street Cambridge near Sylvester Tower. The wooden buildings stored seasoned lumber fed the blaze, producing dense smoke and large flames. Firefighters gained control by morning and Hersey's loss likely exceeds $25,000.
Former Senator William E Chandler calls the new trust for Mrs Mary Baker Eddy a trick by jailors and says defendants used her delusions to serve themselves. In Concord New Hampshire the transfer of all Eddy property to a three member board with a 500000 bond alarms supporters and follows a March 1 equity bill seeking an accounting.
Stanley Hobson age 30 dies after killing his sweetheart Ella Chandler in a bitter quarrel at 30 Camden Street. Hobson fires four shots at Chandler then shoots himself, dying instantly. Chandler is seriously wounded with multiple injuries and remains in City Hospital in dangerous condition. Chandler recently separated from her husband and Hobson also separated from his wife. Neighbors reported the incident to Officer Hartnett. undertaker Gilmore took charge of Hobson’s body.
Officers of Division 5 arrested Fred Fauls 25 of 34 Bradford Street for assault and battery with a sharp instrument on Bessie Alliston 27 of the same address. About 12 30 oclock the attack occurred. The woman was wounded in the neck and right hand and taken to City Hospital with non dangerous wounds.
Fair and warmer Wednesday and Thursday with light variable winds. Boston and vicinity receive mild temperatures as the New England forecast likewise calls for pleasant conditions and gentle breezes.

Ex congressman Joseph H Walker of Worcester dies at 1 AM after long illness from cerebro-hemorrhage. Born December 21 1829 in Boston he moved to Worcester in 1843 and served in the Worcester Common Council 1869 to 1879 then Congress 1888 to 1898 as banking committee chair. Survived by two sons and two daughters including Joseph Walker of Brookline.
Louis Warren Hill, son of James J. Hill, becomes president of the Great Northern system in a leadership change. James J. Hill steps up as chairman of the board as the railroad empire continues its long ascent.

The New York lunacy commission studying Harry K Thaw plans a brief public session tomorrow to hear a final alienist witness and then conducts a private mental and physical exam of Thaw. Justice Fitzgerald is to receive the commission's findings before the Thaw jury reports on Thursday.
After a day of testimony the court again weighs Thaw s mental condition as private examination is renewed. Alienists for the district attorney say he is incapable of understanding his condition or aiding his counsel, while Thaws defense doctors argue he acted rationally and understood the case. Prosecution notes rely on distant observations and writings attributed to Thaw, including 24 pages of clippings and letters to his attorney.
